How to Have Faith in God When Everything Is Going Wrong

Anytime you rely on something, you put your faith in it. What is your faith in?

Some people put their faith in their spouse, others in the government, others on a nightly glass of wine. As Christians, we are called to put our faith in God.

Having faith in God is easy when all is going well—when the kids are behaving, the job is going well, and the biggest issue you face for the day is what to have for dinner.

But how do you access that same faith when everything is going wrong?

Remember that, as a human, your sight is limited. Unlike God, you don’t know the end from the beginning. That means that there are things that you’re not seeing, because you don’t have the big picture.

If you are the type who says, I’ll believe it when I see it or, I need to see the big picture before you move forward in faith, then get comfortable. Because you are going to be sitting in whatever spot you currently find yourself in for a very long time.

Getting out of your current situation requires faith in the unseen. Even when you can’t see any positives to be thankful for. Even when it feels like God has forgotten you. Here are five ways to do just that:

  1. Understand God’s timing. In our self-centered thinking, we assume that we know how everything must work out and in what time frame. God is the only one who knows the big picture. In this life timing is everything. That is true for God’s plan as well. Sit tight and His promises WILL come to pass.

  2. Pray that His will be done. At some point in your life, you must have prayed, Thy will be done. Now that things aren’t working out in your favor, does that mean that His will is not being done in your life? Of course not. It was God’s will for Jesus to go to the cross, despite the agony he had to endure. Just because your current situation isn’t pleasant and happy doesn’t mean you’re not where God wants you.

  3. See this as a time of training and preparation. In our zeal, we often think we’re ready sooner than we really are. I know, as this was frequently the case for me.God may have given you a promise, you may have even had a powerful word spoken over you, but like anything else that’s important in this life, it takes training and preparation. Allow Him to make you into the woman who can hold the position He has purposed you for. You cannot put new wine into old wineskin—it will never hold (Matthew 9:17).

  4. Ask if what you want is good for you. God’s desire is to grant us the desires of our heart but much like putting the keys to a Corvette in the hands of an 8 yr old, what you’re asking for may not be good for you. You may think you know what’s best, but His Word says that ‘no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.’ (Psalm 84:11).

  5. Bar any open doors. Not all of our delays are from God. Some do come from Satan. Have you sinned and given him access? Are you not being faithful in some area of your life and wondering why you’re having trouble having faith in God when everything is going wrong? Close that door and trust that God will take care of everything you need—that’s faith!

Jesus came so that we could have an abundant life (Jn 10:10), but He also said, “Don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you” (1 Peter 4:12).

You can bet your bottom dollar that you will have trouble at times—we all will. I won’t deceive you into thinking that it’s easy to have faith in God when all is going wrong. But I will say that if you trust in Him and hang on, He will do more to turn your situation around than you could have possibly imagined.
