7 Strategies to Be More Than Conquerors

“We are more than conquerors through Christ who loved us”  Romans 8:37

There is one thing that all successful people have in common. It’s not money and it’s not circumstances. It’s the way they think.

Whether your goal is to start your own business or experience more joy in your marriage, the first step in getting what you want is thinking different—and better—thoughts.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is basing their mindset on their feelings. This is dangerous. While feelings can reveal what you value, they are never meant to be drivers. Putting your feelings in the driver’s seat can send you sailing off a cliff like Thelma and Louise.

The problem is that feelings can be so powerful that regardless of the strength of your will, they will often win out and get you to lash out in anger, give in to temptation, or do something you later regret.

These 7 strategies to be more than conquerors help create the mindset you need to set you up for success.

  1. Skip the excuses. I have no doubt that you’ve had some bad breaks. But the truth is, we all have. Stop blaming everything and everyone for the way you think. Your thoughts are your responsibility. You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond and how you think about it. So the next time life gives you lemons, make an effort, not an excuse.
  2. Discover what others who have what you want think. Whether your desire is to be a famous public speaker, a nutrition coach or have a closer relationship to God, find people who have what you want and study them. What do they believe? I suspect you’ll find their thinking is radically different than your mindset.
  3. Dump the perfectionism. Yes, it would be wonderful if everything you did turned out perfectly, but let’s step out of la la land and back to reality. Perfectionism is a stall tactic to avoid possible criticism. If you can remember that there will always be room for improvement, you can begin to embrace the feedback that others can bring.
  4. Heal from your past. Your past leaves a massive imprint on your life and unless you’ve sought professional help to heal from it, it likely is lying dormant. Do yourself a favor and invest in professional help. You’d be surprised to learn how much your past is still holding you back. But once you get those old weights off your shoulders, you’ll be ready to fly.
  5. Have a support system that challenges you. I love the saying “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” The people you surround yourself with have a major impact on you. If you surround yourself with like-minded people (which most of us do), you will remain stuck. But if you allow others to challenge your thinking, you may be amazed at the heights you can soar to.
  6. Master the art of gratitude. Gratitude is more than a childhood lesson; it’s an attitude. I have seen people who have very little and are grateful for what they do have and others who complain despite their abundance. Stop looking at what everyone else has and start looking at what God has blessed you with. Some of the greatest hardships I’ve endured turned out to be my greatest blessings.
  7. Stick with it. When the going gets tough, the tough stick with it while the lazy, slothful, entitled, and impatient give up. If you are not willing to persevere and persist, then I would question how badly you want something. If you need to develop the skills to stick to it, make the investment because anything worth having is going to take work.
