Confidence isn’t something that you feel consistently. Rather, it comes as a result of your belief that you can perform a task successfully. Meaning, it’s situational. I can have confidence to get up and speak in front of a crowd but have no confidence in my ability to fly an aircraft.
The good news about this fact is that confidence is within your control. Here are three steps to help you build so much that you’ll even impress yourself.
3 Steps to Mind Blowing Confidence
- Get out of your head. If you want to feel more confident, you’ve got to change your thoughts because you will only ever have as much confidence as your mind will allow. Put another way, if you think you’re a loser, you will feel like a loser. On the other hand, if you think you’re beautiful, you will feel beautiful no matter what anyone else says.
That being said, having more confidence is more than just positive self-talk–the words may come out of your mouth but if you don’t believe what they are saying, they don’t resonate in your heart. That’s because your thoughts are dictating your feelings and if you don’t change the thought, the confident feeling won’t arise. Take this free quiz, “How toxic are your thoughts?” to find out how much your particular thoughts are impacting your self-confidence.
- Take your own inventory. Many people who lack self-confidence do so because they believe that they have to be great at everything—a surefire recipe for doing nothing. No one is good at everything, everyone is good at some things.People with low self-confidence have a tendency to focus on their weaknesses instead of their strengths. We all have weaknesses but they are designed to keep us humble, not to keep us from our purpose. Each of us has been created with unique temperaments and talents. If you want to walk in confidence, you need to discover the powers that God has planted in you. My free guide, “Listen to your Inner Voice and Discover What God Wants You to Do With Your Life,” can help you uncover what you were purposed for. Until you embrace your strengths and accept and manage your weaknesses, you will remain a slave to others and your feelings.
- Take action steps. A surefire way to build confidence is to step out. After all, you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you give yourself a chance to do the thing you’re not confident about. Even if it’s a baby step, take it.When you begin to step out, you’ll be surprised to see that what you were fearing before is actually nothing to fear. And with each step you build more confidence and the next thing you know, you’ll realize you are doing the thing you were feeling nervous about. You may not know exactly how you’re doing it, but you’ll be doing it nonetheless!
There’s one more thing that confident people possess, and that is a solid support system. It may be comprised of nurturing parents, rock-solid friends, a counselor, or a support group, but truly confident people know that they will spiral downward if left to their own thinking. A support system holds you accountable and provides constructive feedback that helps you grow. When you grow, so does your confidence.
