You thought it was just narcissism…
But something in your spirit knows it’s darker. Much darker.
You’ve watched them twist truth, manipulate the situation, and call it love.
You’ve reasoned, prayed, and even tried to help them change—but now you’re asking:
“What if this isn’t just toxic… what if it’s spiritual narcissism?”
Below are 3 biblical questions every believer should ask to discern what’s operating behind the mask—and how to protect yourself from it.
đźš« Not Every Narcissist Is Just Emotionally Immature or Traumatized
Some behavior is driven by something deeper—something spiritual.
📖 2 Corinthians 11:14 — “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
That means not everyone who looks polished, acts kind, or even calls themselves “Christian” is walking in the Spirit.
There’s a big difference between emotional dysfunction and spiritual narcissism—a deception rooted not just in trauma, but in spiritual manipulation.
📖 1 John 4:1 — “Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”
Let’s do exactly that—because these 3 questions will help you get clarity… fast.
❓Question #1: What’s the Fruit?
🔔 Here’s the thing:
You can argue with opinions. You can even dismiss gut feelings.
But you can’t argue with fruit.
If you’re trying to figure out whether what you’re dealing with is narcissism, deep trauma, or something darker… the first place to look is the evidence it leaves behind.
Fruit doesn’t lie.
You don’t need a psychology degree to spot spiritual narcissism—you just need to examine what it consistently produces:
- Is it peace? Or chaos?
- Healing? Or destruction?
- Love and truth? Or fear and confusion?
👉 You don’t need to analyze the root when the fruit is already rotten.
When someone is truly operating under the Holy Spirit, their life bears fruit:
📖 Galatians 5:22 — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness.
But when it’s another spirit at work, you’ll see a different pattern.
📖 Matthew 7:16 — “By their fruit you will recognize them.”
💥 Here’s What to Watch For:
- A wake of emotional chaos and confusion
- No matter how much love, prayer, or patience you give, it’s always self-focused
- Lies and manipulation masked as “growth” or “love”
- A complete lack of true repentance—only damage control
📖 1 Corinthians 14:33 — “God is not the author of confusion.”
If your peace is constantly under attack, and destruction follows this person like a shadow, there may be a spirit of confusion, rebellion, or destruction in operation.
And if you find yourself constantly questioning your reality—that’s fruit, too, my friend.
❓Question #2: How Do They Respond to Truth?
If Question #1 reveals the fruit, this one exposes the root.
See, fruit shows the outcome… but this question uncovers what’s feeding it beneath the surface.
Imagine walking into a dark room and flipping on the lights—suddenly, all the cockroaches scatter. Why?
Because darkness is where they thrive.
The same is true with toxic people under spiritual influence.
The moment truth enters the conversation, they don’t just withdraw—they fight to keep you in the dark.
👉 So ask: How do they respond to truth?
- Are they convicted or combative?
- Are they humble—or do they hide?
“Light exposes what darkness hides. So why do they rage when truth enters the room?”
📖 John 3:20 — “Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light…”
👿 Spirits That Could Be in Operation:
- Spirit of Deception — Twists truth, gaslights, and confuses
- Spirit of Pride — Cannot accept correction or admit fault
- Spirit of Offense — Causes hypersensitivity, victimhood, and resentment
These spirits don’t just block truth—they attack it, especially when it threatens their control.
You’ll often see the spirit of victimhood thrive here as well, working alongside pride, deception, and manipulation, making it dangerously cunning.
❓Question #3: Do They Imitate Righteousness but Deny Its Power?
Some people don’t reject the truth—they repackage it.
They’ll use Christian language, spiritual-sounding phrases, and even Scripture to convince you they’re righteous… while quietly manipulating you behind the scenes.
A wolf in sheep’s clothing doesn’t bark—it bleats. It blends in.
It looks the part, sounds the part—but it’s still hunting… for control.
👉 Ask yourself:
Do they imitate righteousness—but deny its power?
- They speak peace—but sow confusion
- They pray publicly—but stir chaos privately
- They claim Jesus—but act like Judas
“They wear the costume of Christianity but walk in the character of control.”
📖 2 Timothy 3:5 — “Having a form of godliness but denying its power…”
If they use spiritual language, quote Scripture, or claim moral superiority—but bear no fruit of the Spirit, they may be operating in counterfeit righteousness.
đź’Ą Spirits That Could Be in Operation:
- Religious Spirit — Obsessed with appearances, resists true transformation
- Spirit of Control (Jezebel) — Manipulates and dominates under a false spiritual mask
- Spirit of Hypocrisy — Says the right things, but lives the opposite
📖 Galatians 5:22–23 — Love, peace, patience, kindness…
If those are missing, it’s time to test what spirit is really at work.
This isn’t about walking in a “spirit of suspicion,” but about discerning the truth.
When you consistently see patterns of destruction, deception, and counterfeit righteousness, it’s no longer just a personality issue.
It’s a spiritual battle.
📖 1 John 4:1 — “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”
🙏 What to Do When You Recognize Spiritual Narcissism?
Ask.
📖 James 1:5 — “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault…”
God will give you the wisdom and discernment you need to see through these wicked spirits.
But don’t you dare ignore that wisdom.
It would be better if you never even discerned it than to receive wisdom from God and disregard it.
📖 Matthew 25:28–29 —
“So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.
For whoever has will be given more… Whoever does not have, even what they have, will be taken from them.”
Though this parable is about stewardship, it carries a powerful principle:
When you fail to use what God gives you—including wisdom—it can be removed or given to someone who will use it faithfully.
So when God shows you spiritual narcissism at work, now is not the time to “find the best in them” or “just show them Jesus.”
No—this is the time you go to war.
I get it. At this point, you probably want justice… maybe even revenge.
But if you truly want to see God’s justice in full operation…
