And that’s why I am hosting a live online workshop on Saturday, January 29th from 12 to 2 Eastern on How to Find your God-given Purpose.
If you are ready to answer the cry for purpose, with the determination to discover that, I hope you will join me. What do you define as confident? Is it a strong assertive personality? Is it someone who knows what they want and then goes after it? You may see only confident people fulfilling their God-given purpose.
What if I told you that your concept of confidence may be a little skewed. Romans, 12:2 reminds us to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds” and we know what the world says about confidence. It says people who push ahead or confident people who demand their way are confident people who constantly say they are confident must be confident, but I submit to you that much of what we’ve been taught about confidence isn’t confidence at all. It’s actually pride and insecurity. Yes. That’s right. Many of the people that you think are confident are simply overcompensating to disguise their insecurities.
Think about it. Far fewer people would be caught in toxic narcissistic relationships if they were better able to discern Godly confidence from pride and insecurity. Since we don’t want to follow the pattern of this world. We asked the question. What is the Bible say about confidence? Well, Philippians 4:13 says that “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” So you wouldn’t feel confident with the ability to do anything. So why don’t we? Why do you struggle with your confidence in your appearance, in your abilities, in your direction, in your purpose, in your mannerisms?
Why do you struggle to feel confident? Well, I believe it’s because you’re focusing on the wrong thing. You. All of the Scriptures in the Bible that refer to confidence, bring hope because they are grounded in him. That’s right in God, not you. I can do all things through him, who gives me strength, be strong and courageous, God is with you to find that, and Joshua 1:9, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.” Psalm 138:8.
The biblical references are extensive and they have one thing in common. It’s all about being able to be and do what we’re called to do with God. So, it’s no wonder that we feel insecure. When we try to build confidence in our own strengths. We were never meant to, and maybe you’re stuck in insecurities, call dependency, or just unable to find and fulfill your god-given purpose. And I would venture to guess that much of what you’re struggling with. Comes back to a confidence issue.
So, let’s talk today about the steps to building confidence that is powered by God, so you can move forward in all that God’s calling you to do.
#1 – Be Yourself. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works. My soul knows it full well.” That’s great advice. When someone says to just be yourself, but the question is, do you know who you are?
God has created you very unique, you were created on purpose for a purpose. But before you can discover what God has called you to do, you have to discover who God has created you to be. You are so much more than the sum of your experiences or the toxic opinion of others. You are a masterpiece and it is my heart that you would get to know the beautiful creation that is you. So how do you do that? Well, start with an understanding of your temperament. Your temperament is a culmination of your unique, god-given traits and they include your strengths and weaknesses, your communication style, your preferences, your desires, and your needs.
You also have unique experiences that God wants to use for the good of others and the glory of God. So it’s time you stopped hiding from your past and allow God to use it to propel you into your purpose.
#2 – Stop comparing. If you want to live a life of insecurity then go ahead and look around at what everyone else is doing because you will be guaranteed to remain insecure and live way beneath your potential. Trust me, my friend, there is always somebody out there that is doing it better than you. doing it longer than you, looks better than you, has it better than you. But if you want to fulfill the purpose for which God has planned for you, if you want to do it with confidence then you must avoid the comparison trap. 1 Peter 4:10 tells us “as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
This shows me that it’s God who gives the gifts. I can look for another person’s gifts or abilities and be impressed and maybe even be inspired. But if I believe that I am somehow falling short because I’m not like them, then I’m going to remain insecure and that’s because I was never meant to do what they are doing. I was meant to do what God equipped me to do. My friend, you are meant to do, what God has equipped you to do and when you stay in your lane, you operate in a grace and dare I say confidence that now serves others and glorifies God.
#3 – Demolish the lies. We accept the lies that bounced around in our minds as normal and while we should expect the lies to attack us. We should never submit to believing them 2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us that “we demolish arguments and every pretense that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.”
How do you overcome the lies?
With truth, if the truth is that we are God’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Ephesians 2:10
If the truth is that you are made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27.
If the truth is you can do all things through Christ. Philippians, 4:13,
Then up until this point what you’ve chosen to believe is a lie, and for every lie, you’re believing there’s a truth you’re not receiving.
If you find that, you have to lean on others to support your confidence my friend, you’re on shaky ground.
No one can know the truth for you. I know the truth, but I can’t know it for you. I can tell you the truth. But the only way that the truth will defeat the lies is if you appropriate that truth for yourself and maybe your lies have been with you for so long that they feel like truth. I get it. Unfortunately, just because a lie is true to you doesn’t make it true. And if you want to walk in a confidence that is powered by God that is backed by Heaven, you must rely on God to know the truth.
Because you see the truth is confidence is really just an illusion. Confidence comes from trust. So if I can trust that God’s word is true. If I can trust that God’s promises will come to pass. I now can walk in confidence.
